Beachner Grain Elevator Mural in Wichita, Kansas

A grain elevator usually tells you something about a city’s work. GLeo’s mural on the Beachner elevator in north Wichita adds another subject: the people who make a neighborhood.

People on an industrial landmark

Kansas Tourism identifies the Colombian artist GLeo as the mural’s creator and places the work within Horizontes. The project sought connections between the predominantly Latino NorthEnd and the historically African American Northeast, neighborhoods divided by an industrial corridor.

The tourism account connects the painted figures with people who live or previously lived in the NorthEnd. That context changes a useful first question. Instead of asking only how large the painting is, ask whose presence the work makes visible.

Try two ways of looking

Begin with the entire structure in view. Consider how the elevator’s form shapes your encounter with the portraits. Then choose one face and look at its direction within the composition. The change of attention—from building to person—offers a way to experience scale without reducing the artwork to a measurement.

This is a viewing suggestion, not an explanation of any individual sitter’s life. The people represented deserve more than an invented story attached to a photograph.

Make this a starting point for north Wichita

The directory provides the mural’s recorded location and photograph. Plan a lawful public viewing position before stopping; an industrial site is not automatically open for visitors to wander through. Use the Kansas mural map to select another Wichita work and compare the kinds of buildings artists use.

For a second stop, look for an artwork whose surface is closer to pedestrian scale. The contrast can help you notice how distance changes what you see first: a whole composition, a face, or an individual painted mark.
