Since the struggle of the Revolutionary War, the flag of the United States has served as a symbol of unity. It was first officially recognized by an act of Congress in 1777. The regulation established that the flag should consist of 13 alternating stripes of red on white with 13 white stars on a blue field. The flag of took on its present configuration of 50 stars in 1959 with the formal admission of Hawaii into statehood.
