Installed in 2020. A stirring depiction of an iconic WWII photograph. Journalist Joe Rosenthal captured the moment six Marines planted the US flag at the summit of Mount Suribachi during the battle of Iwo Jima. Completing the patriotic theme, a pole extending above the mural presents the American flag and brings a unique movement to the artwork.

The mural was dedicated on Feb. 23rd, 2021 – the 76th Anniversary of the original flag raising by US Marines. In appreciation of the project, the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation has also presented an American flag to the City of Clay Center.
